Assigning Boulders to Categories

Boulder assignment lets you control which boulders are available to which categories. This is essential when different skill levels climb different sets of problems.

How it works

During setup, you create a boulder map that links each category combination to a list of boulder numbers. For example:

  • Female / Beginner → Boulders 1–10
  • Female / Advanced → Boulders 11–25
  • Male / Beginner → Boulders 1–10
  • Male / Advanced → Boulders 11–25

When a climber in the "Female / Beginner" category opens the scoring screen, they only see boulders 1–10.

Everyone climbs everything

If all climbers attempt the same boulders (common in redpoint-style comps), assign all boulder numbers to every category. The setup wizard makes this the default — every category gets the full range.

Split sets

For comps where beginners and advanced climbers have different boulder circuits, split your boulders by category. Make sure there's no overlap if you want clean separation, or allow some shared boulders in the middle range.

Things to consider

  • Number your boulders on the wall clearly — tape or printed signs at each boulder
  • Make sure the numbers in the app match the numbers on the wall
  • If using redpoint scoring, harder boulders should have higher point values
  • Communicate to climbers which boulders are in their category (signage, handout, or announcement)
