Self-Entry vs Judges

BoulderScoring supports two ways to record scores: self-entry (climbers enter their own results) and judge mode (designated judges enter scores). You can use either one or both at the same time.

Self-Entry Mode

In self-entry mode, each climber uses their own phone to record their attempts. After climbing a boulder, they open the app, select the boulder, and log their result (top, zone, or number of attempts).

How it works

  1. Climber joins the comp using the comp password
  2. They select their category (gender, age, level)
  3. After each climb, they tap the boulder and enter their result
  4. The leaderboard updates immediately

When to use self-entry

  • Casual or recreational comps
  • Large events where you don't have enough judges
  • When you trust participants to score honestly
  • Open gym sessions or leagues

Judge Mode

In judge mode, designated volunteers or staff enter scores for climbers. Judges log in with the judge password and are typically stationed at specific boulders.

How it works

  1. Judge opens the app and enters the judge password
  2. They select the boulder they're judging
  3. As each climber attempts the boulder, the judge records the result
  4. The leaderboard updates immediately

When to use judges

  • More formal or sanctioned competitions
  • When accuracy is critical (finals, qualifying rounds)
  • Youth comps where participants may not have phones

Using both together

You can run self-entry and judge mode at the same time. For example, you might have judges at the harder boulders while letting climbers self-score the easier ones. Both types of entries show up on the same leaderboard.
